“According to USA Today, the Pop-Tarts Bowl mascot is now the toastiest Halloween costume for 2024 (Halloween costumes, Sept. 24, 2024).” - Rex
You simply can’t go wrong with Pop-Tarts. Frosted, of course. - Shane
“Well, now this made me stop and think (Shoes off, Sept. 25, 2024). When we come through the garage into the house, our shoes come off. When we come in the patio door, not usually. I never really thought about it. There is no rhyme or reason. It’s just something we all, including the kids when they were home, always have done. And we don’t care if visitors take their shoes off or not. We have lots of carpet, and I am thinking bare floors would not be so inviting?” - Diane
I am glad to get you thinking about these important subjects. - Shane
“I went to Europe a few years ago to visit my wife's family (Shoes off, Sept. 25, 2024). We arrived at her aunt and uncle's place. I took my shoes off at the door. Her uncle, who spoke French and virtually no English, disappeared and returned with a pair of his house slippers. I was then informed that, at least in that Belgian home, you didn't wear your shoes or go in socks around the house. I was then told it was his ‘best’ pair. Now I have a pair old Sketchers I wear as my house shoes!” - Brad
How do you say Sketchers in French? - Shane
“Shane, if people today would be playing pinball machines instead of video games on their phones can you imagine what the world would be like? (Pinball, Sept. 30, 2024) Pinball machines were stationary, needed coins to play and usually you had to stand to play them! They couldn't be played in cars, in school or work or even at home in kids' bedrooms. I've never heard of anyone throwing a pinball machine when they lost or were told to go outside. Hope I'm not sounding like a ‘you kids get off of my lawn’ guy.” - James
You, too, have such a supple wrist. - Shane
Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Des Moines has been evolving into the next Halloween Town USA with Zombie Burger, Monsterama Arcade and Pizzeria, and the seasonal Slaughterhouse attraction with its new Haunt speakeasy. (If you know, you know.)
My creative career started with a love of horror films, and it was never about violence. There is more violence in true crime shows that your stay-at-home significant other binge-watches during the week. What I loved about horror films were the wild worlds I would see on screen. | | READ MORE |

Hoyt Sherman Place and Des Moines Art Center have major talent scout acumen for bringing future stars to town. This fall provides a pair of such affirmations. Samara Joy appeared at Hoyt Sherman this summer and now her new album “Portrait” is garnering rave reviews from New York Times, JazzVoice and Forbes. I first saw works of Mickalene Thomas' art in Des Moines Art Center’s brilliant 2011 exhibition “Surface Value.” She is one of the most celebrated artists of the season now. CBS, Forbes, New York Times and Philadelphia Enquirer all say so. "Mickalene Thomas: All About Love," her first international tour, comes to the venerable Barnes Foundation Oct. 25 – Jan. 12 on its way to Hayward Gallery, London, and Les Abattoirs Musée–Frac Occitanie, Toulouse.
The Chef's Recipe reports that the Alaskan Duck Fart is becoming the hot new cocktail of fall 24. "This whimsical, layered cocktail, originally from Alaska, is quickly becoming a favorite in bars and homes alike. Its unique blend of Irish cream, coffee liqueur, and Canadian whiskey is ... a delightful treat for the senses." Try it with Five Farms Irish Cream — " the world's first farm-to-table liquor," from free ranged dairy cows in County Cork.

Featured in the current issue of Grimes Living magazine | | New again Residents share their home renovation experiences.
By Ashley Rullestad
For many homeowners, the day comes, sooner or later, when they look around their abode and wonder when the carpet was ever stylish, the wall color ever stunning and the layout ever functional. They realize new curtains, throw pillows and artwork won’t be enough to freshen things up, and the only solution to the weary look of their home is to bite the bullet and invest in some major improvements. And, when the work is done, their home — and enthusiasm for it — feels new.
Top notch tile The Scharfs have been in their house for four years. Since it was new construction, they knew they would have to add a few things like hardware for kitchen cabinets and a backsplash. They also wanted to upgrade the master shower from a standard insert to something sleeker, so those items were first on their home improvement list. | | READ MORE |

1995: O.J. Simpson acquitted. At the end of a sensational trial, former football star O.J. Simpson is acquitted of the brutal 1994 double murder of his estranged wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman. In the epic 252-day trial, Simpson’s “dream team” of lawyers employed creative and controversial methods to convince jurors that Simpson’s guilt had not been proved “beyond a reasonable doubt,” thus surmounting what the prosecution called a “mountain of evidence” implicating him as the murderer....
