“Shane, thanks to you, I now know more about belly buttons than I ever imagined (Belly buttons, Sept. 9, 2024). I know that, medically, they represent where the umbilical cord was attached to each of us, but I once heard a Christian comedian speculate that, when God created Adam, he looked at that huge expanse of navel and, with his finger, went ‘Cootchie!’ And that's how they were created. He also said that the reason God created belly buttons was so that you'd have some place to hold the salt when you eat celery in bed. I haven't tried that.” - Bob

Iowa League of Heroes turns children’s dreams into reality

The rise in popularity of superheroes in the last 20 years has been difficult to ignore. Lists featuring the highest-grossing movies of that time heavily featured Marvel and DC movies and their respective characters. Children especially idolize these superheroes.

When pigs fly. This year’s IgNobel Prize went to a combined Japanese and American research team working out of two Japanese universities. Their discovery, in non-medical terminology, was that mammals (pigs anyway) can breathe through their anuses. This is important because it suggests an inexpensive alternative to ventilation in hospitals, particularly for coma patients. (Newsroom Tokyo)

Courtney Arnold attended ADM Community School District, where her love of learning started — and it has never stopped. She graduated in 2019 from ADM High School and attended Iowa State University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education with endorsements in reading and English language arts.
This fall, she will be starting her second year of teaching and her second year at ADM, now as a kindergarten teacher at Adel Elementary.
“I honestly feel like education chose me. Growing up, I loved being at school and loved my teachers. I would play school in my room with my imaginary students. I still, to this day, can remember how my teachers made me feel loved and cared for, and I always knew I wanted to do the same for my own students. On September 20, 1973, in a highly publicized “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match, top women’s player Billie Jean King, 29, beats Bobby Riggs, 55, a former No. 1 ranked men’s player.
