Good morning to you!

Welcome to an extra edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Shane, I enjoyed the bee sting story (The buzz about bees, July 29, 2024), but in regard to the bee that flew in your shirt sleeve, I am guessing that was actually a yellow jacket wasp. Small and aggressive, they may look similar to a bee, but a true bee cannot sting multiple times. A bee’s stinger typically remains in its victim and is usually lethal to the bee. A wasp, however, can track right down your body, stinging you multiple times. Have a nice day.” - Steve

You are probably right. Either way, I know one thing. The last thing that wasp did was sting me. - Shane

“When we moved into our house, there was a green toilet and tub in the main bathroom and a pink toilet and sink off of the master bathroom (Home improvement projects, Aug. 20, 2024). I felt like I was back in the 1950s. Both colors have been changed.” - Nichola

A mauve toilet? Maybe. A pink toilet? No way. - Shane

“Shane, as a fellow motorcyclist, I have traveled through many states, and I must say that Arkansas is one of the top five states to find twisty, fun roads to ride in (Most fun states, Aug. 21, 2024). A must-see destination is Eureka Springs.” - James

Twisty. Fun. Arkansas. I think you just came up with their new state slogan. - Shane

“Total agreement with seemingly miles of extra receipt paper containing offers I don't care about, and even if I did, wouldn't be able to use them before they expired (Receipts, Aug. 26, 2024). Disappearing ink seems to be mostly dependent upon the style of printer used to print the receipt. I have always thought these were from a thermal printer. Some fax machine copies are like this as well. Ink will evaporate on its own or if you get it moist. If you have a crucial receipt, suggest you make a photocopy for the file if it is important. So many places don't give receipts anymore without a customer insisting.” - Chuck

Wait one minute, Chuck. You have a fax machine… with thermal paper? - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. We had a bad habit of forgetting if we closed the garage door as we drove away (Furnace filter reminder, Aug. 27, 2024). A technique I learned during a ride along on a BNSF locomotive (Operation Lifesaver training) was that the engineer and conductor verbally acknowledge the aspect (color) of the signals. We verbally confirm that the garage door is down.” - John

Good plan. And good teamwork. Wonder Twin powers, activate! - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

WHAT'S THE BUZZ?                         Residents share their experiences as beekeepers.

By Lindsey Giardino

While the Iowa DNR reports the number of native bees in Iowa continues to decline, more and more apiarists (beekeepers) are emerging to nurture the bee population. As of Jan. 1 of last year, Iowa boasted 36,000 bee colonies for operations with five or more colonies, according to the USDA. That’s a big uptick from the prior year’s 26,000 colonies and the 15,500 colonies the year before that. But who are these beekeepers, and what drives their passion? Some local apiarists share their stories.

Beekeeping for the entire family
Landon Murch, a recent North Polk High School graduate, became interested in beekeeping back in 2018. Then, he got his entire family on board.

“We enrolled in a beekeeping course at a local community college not knowing that his initial curiosity would blossom into a fulfilling hobby,” Amy, his mom, says.
