“Wow, Shane, you are brave and innovative for instigating these many moves (Moving, July 18, 2024)! Lucky you didn’t box up and toss Jolene out when cleaning. And since you’re so experienced, would you consider cleaning out our basement? Just asking.” - Judy
Judy, I am not moving your piano. - Shane
“I remind my golfing friends that golf spelled backward is flog (A president’s golf game, July 15, 2024). That might have been a more appropriate name.” - Brad
Kook spelled backwards is kook. - Shane
“Regarding your question about what not to do in a thunderstorm (Don’t take a bath, July 17, 2024), don’t play golf or hold golf clubs, unless you go with the old golfer’s joke about holding a one iron over your head because not even God can hit a one iron.” - Rex
I prefer to take a nap during a thunderstorm. - Shane
“Young people will never have a sore index finger from dialing a rotary phone, the experiences of talking to directory assistance or an operator, long distance phone charges, party lines, the sounds of the coins clinking in the pay phone, a pay phone, a bank of pay phones, a home visit from the telephone repair man, a collect call (unless they're incarcerated), the transition from long tangling cords of wall mounted phones to long antenna wireless phones, or the princess phone (Burning your butt on a metal slide, July 23, 2024). Thanks for the thoughts.” - John, the son of a telephone repairman
John, do I dare ask if you ever watched “Fast Times at Ridgemont High”? - Shane
“I don’t know how it was in your house, but in our house the youngest was charged with changing the channel for Daddy (Burning your butt on a metal slide, July 23, 2024). I had to do it for two or three years, until my sister grew up enough to change the channel, and then it became the task of the youngest who could actually do the job. Except for when all the younger children were in bed and it became my job again.” - Donna
Oh, yes. The human remote control. In my childhood home, that sometimes meant using a pliers because the plastic channel knob was broken. Fortunately, I could count all the available channels on one hand. - Shane
“Good morning, Shane. You hit another one out of the park today (The oak leaf and the fox, July 25, 2024). In a word, gratitude is perhaps one of the most stabilizing traits a person can embrace. Thanks for your eclectic mix of inspiration, humor, thought provocation, and more — a delectable weekday morning feast that is rich in content and exceedingly low in calories.” - John
And I am grateful for your kind words, John. - Shane
Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

From the July issue of CITYVIEW | | FEATURE STORY Complex crazy
By Cyote Williams
Since 2021, several Des Moines suburbs have opened massive, multi-million-dollar, multi-use sports complexes. In West Des Moines, development costs for the MidAmerican Energy RecPlex were close to $60 million in 2021, according to the Business Record. Waukee launched Triumph Park in cooperation with Confluence and received positive shoutouts from Apple CEO Tim Cook in 2022. In 2023, two more suburbs opened their sports complexes. The development costs for GrimesPlex in Grimes, which was initially a private venture that became a public one, and the Gregg Young Sports Campus in Norwalk were both upwards of $30 million.

Food tourism. To justify reports that Florida had paid expenses for Michelin to create a food guide to the state, Florida's tourism department announced that Tampa brought in $1.09 billion in food spending last year, Orlando $7.33 billion, and Miami $4.88 billion, and that tourism accounted for much of that. Iowa has a lot of food draws but does little to promote them.
Wednesday was Day of the Ox in Japan. It is traditional to eat eel then to celebrate the midsummer. Baby eel is making a comeback in both Japan and Spain — its two most adoring countries.

From the July issue of Bondurant Living magazine | | Yards with personality Residents share how their landscaping choices reflect their style.
By Darren Tromblay
A plethora of pots. A hillside of hostas. Wildflowers willy nilly. Manicured hedges and straight edges. From wild and unruly to precise and planned, the landscaping around a home often reflects the owner’s own unique style. While some prefer lush, thick foliage, others enjoy succulents among a garden of rocks. From a tropical vibe to the charm of a country cottage. From mad about mulch to mad for magnolias. Whatever their preferences, homeowners with a green thumb and plenty of imagination enjoy creating landscaping masterpieces with pizzazz.
A beautiful setting for life — and a wedding As Susie Kamm and her husband, Steve, stared out into what was then an empty field in Bondurant in 1995, imagining what their future place of residence would look like, little did they know that, nearly 30 years later, this would be the spot they would still call home. This place, where thousands of memories have been made across the years, is something special to them. And it’s been treated thusly, right down to field stones and boulders that dot the 1-acre plot of land, the decades-old lilacs given to Susie by her grandmother, and the numerous varieties or flora that give the spot such colorful life.
