“Though it has been some years since I have, played one never forgets the scent of a ball glove (Scents of summer, June 4, 2024).” - Brent
And neither will I. What a great sensory memory. There is nothing like the combination of leather and sweat. Thanks, Brent. - Shane
“I once heard that a to-do list becomes actionable when you assign times to the tasks (Lists, June 5, 2024). For that reason, I've moved away from notepads and started assigning time blocks in my calendar for each task/tasks. This way ensures everything gets done.” - Sara
Sounds like a good plan. I have learned that my to-do lists become actionable when I actually start working on them instead of working on excuses. - Shane
“Riddle me this (A place for everything, June 10, 2024). Why does one always find what one was looking for in the last place they look?” - Brent
Hmmm. If I could just find my memory. - Shane
“Shane, I always loved getting a slinky in my stocking at Christmas when I was growing up (Slinky, June 11, 2024). When our grandkids were younger, we had a retro toy Christmas for the kids. We gave Tinker Toys, Lincoln Logs, Barrel of Monkeys and the Slinky. The kids loved every one of the gifts, and it was one of the best Christmases we had when they were younger. Thanks for the memories!” - Lu Anne
What a great idea! We definitely need to do that. Meanwhile, I can’t help but think of my dog leaving chew marks on my Tinker Toys, Lincoln Logs and Barrel of Monkeys. The Slinky? Not so much.
Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

From the June issue of CITYVIEW | | DES MOINES FORGOTTEN Before ‘The Gayborhood’
By Kristian Day
With another Pride month here, I have dug deep into the history books of the gay lore of Des Moines. In November of 2022, I wrote a column on the Blue Goose and the P&S Lounge, two gay bars with origins dating back to the late 1960s and early 1970s.
The P&S Lounge was located at 301 Second Ave. and owned by two lesbians, Peggy and Shirley. P&S eventually sold to Chuck Brooks (brother to Des Moines city councilman Archie Brooks) who went on to open many gay bars including the famous City Disco Park.

Morel mushrooms are making news for the wrong reasons. Iowa's favorite fungus killed a couple people and made at least 52 others sick — none in Iowa. Investigations by CDC blamed "false morels" and people who ate real morels raw. Don't do that. As for washing them, which is advised by the CDC, Washington Post discovered that 10 seconds (of soaking) is the magic number to dislodge dirt, sand and bugs before the mushroom absorbs too much water to slough off with longer cooking.
How many is too many? Tyson sells roughly 20 billion chicken nuggets and 5.5 billion chicken wings a year. (That's about 17 wings for every human in the U.S.) And it needs more to sell. It is adding 16 new seasoned and marinated chicken, beef and pork products in its 2024 fiscal year, seven of which are chicken. (WSJ)

From the June issue of Norwalk Living magazine | | Curtain call Residents share their experiences on stage.
By Chantel Boyd
For many people, public speaking is their worst fear. They recall suffering from butterflies in the stomach or worse before stepping out on the stage for their elementary school programs and the terror of having to speak in front of their peers in high school speech class. For them, the thought of performing before the public in a stage production sounds as appealing as being tarred and feathered. Others actually seek the spotlight, volunteer to memorize lines and create play props, eagerly awaiting the day the curtains are drawn back and the show begins. Some of these people share their reasons why center stage is the place they want to be.
A passion for theatre Michael Howland lives in Norwalk and is passionate about theatre.
"I have been involved in theater since 2009 in the Des Moines and surrounding areas," he says, adding he has performed in Indianola, Pella, Knoxville, Newton, Urbandale, Jefferson and Ankeny.
"I have done 15 plays and musicals at the Des Moines Playhouse."
