“Yes, the telephone was invented before I was born. But my memory seems to go back that long, and your column triggered it (Memorizing your phone number, March 6, 2024). I do remember our phone number was 3432-J, and our next door neighbor was 3432-W. She was old and rarely used the phone, so we hardly ever ended up on the party line at the same time. My dad's office number was 1606. I wonder if it was a private line for his private business because it had no letter following the number.” - Margaret

“Shane, 104 days was such a good column (Johnston Living magazine, March 2024). As a Realtor, we tend to work a lot (100 hours a week) or a little (whoa….it’s Friday, what shall I do?). I tend to be the former. Some of the best advice I received was from a seasoned agent: ‘Get out your calendar in January and make your vacation plans for the entire year and plan your work around it.’ Great advice. Readers have alerted us about the avalanche of media interest in “the next new thing.” That is something that came with social media. Everyone with a smart phone is a restaurant critic, often posting while dining out. People camp overnight to be first to eat at a new Chick-fil-A or Krispy Kreme.
Not too long ago, media refused to publish a review before a new place was six months or even a year old. When The Des Moines Register still published critical food reviews, they might have done a “preliminary visit” but never a full feature before six months. Today, the entire media races to the next new place, even reviewing soft openings. Mediocre new joints get more ink and camera time than superior older places in the same genre. | | | READ MORE |

Nodoguro (literally "black throat"), a big eyed, red skinned, deep water perch, has become “the whitefish toro,” and with prices to match those of blue fin tuna belly. Fifteen years ago, nodoguro was a cheap fish eaten mostly in fishing ports on the Sea of Japan. Then gourmets in California, Singapore, Tokyo and Hong Kong discovered its high fat content. Now it is reviving the entire economy of Ishikawa Prefecture in Japan. Jay Wang of Wasabi says he has been able to get some just twice in 12 years. (Oishi Tokyo)
Popeye's is making fish sandwiches with flounder as a Lenten special. Culver's has a Lenten special Northwoods walleye.
Specials: Friday is all you can eat fried cod day after 3 p.m. at Machine Shed (11151 Hickman Road., Urbandale)... Mariscos El Capitan (2809 Sixth Ave., Des Moines) has some interesting new menu items. You can now get whole coconuts stuffed with three kinds of ceviche; pineapples stuffed with creamed seafood; and whole grilled octopus, tilapia or red snapper.

DES MOINES, Iowa — The city of Des Moines is gearing up for another festive St. Patrick's Day in the metro, and local law enforcement is joining forces with businesses to keep everyone safe. The Des Moines Police Department said they'll have more officers out on the streets than normal, from the parade to the activities on Court Avenue. Sgt. DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa Supreme Court is set to hear the so-called fetal heartbeat law case in April. The Iowa legislature passed the law during a special session in July. The law would ban abortions in Iowa after cardiac activity can be detected, which can occur at around six weeks of pregnancy and before many women know they are pregnant.
