Good morning to you!

Is Caitlin Clark the greatest of all time in NCAA women’s basketball? ESPN’s Jay Williams says no — or, at least, not yet. Unless you have been living under a deflated basketball, you know by now that Clark became the all-time leading NCAA women’s basketball scorer recently. That, in itself, is an amazing feat, but does it make her the greatest of all time?

Clark was the AP Player of the Year, won the John Wooden Award, and will certainly be a three-time NCAA First-Team All-American, but one accolade is missing so far. Clark and her Hawkeyes have not won a national championship. Williams says that, in itself, prevents Clark from being the greatest NCAA women’s basketball player of all time. “I hold ‘great’ — or the levels of immortality or the pantheon — to when you win championships,” he said.

As Iowans, many of us take attacks on one of our own as personal, and a growing number of people seem to have an opinion on Clark and her accomplishments. Williams’ words got me thinking, so much so that I decided to research who the all-time scorers are in other NCAA and professional sports. These are not all, by any means, but do provide a sampling.

Most who are following Clark’s story know that Pete Maravich of Louisiana State University is the all-time NCAA men’s basketball scorer. In the NBA, the Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James is the all-time scoring leader and keeps adding to his total. The WNBA? Diana Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury holds the crown. Clearly, in the world of basketball, individual statistics are prized and heralded. But what about other sports?

In NCAA football, the all-time scorer is Will Reichard, a kicker for Alabama. In the NFL, it is Adam Vinatieri, a kicker who played and won championships with the New England Patriots.

In Major League Baseball, the all-time scorer is Rickey Henderson, who played for nine teams in his 25 seasons.

In professional soccer, the official leading career scorer is Cristiano Ronaldo, a Portuguese professional who plays for both Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr and the Portugal national team.

I tried to find the leading individual point scorer in NCAA men’s wrestling. Although the statistics surely exist, I could not find any results on points scored. Wins? Yes. Falls? Yes. Individual points scored? Nothing. Oddly, in a sport often viewed as individual performances, only championships seem to matter.

With that in mind, maybe Williams’ comments do mean something. Fortunately, in just a few weeks, Clark and her Hawkeyes will have the opportunity to prove to Williams, and everyone, that they are the greatest.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thanks for reading.

Retirement-age workers share why they continue to report for duty.

By Becky Kolosik

The vision of what life is like “after retirement” is as unique as each individual. For some, that vision focuses on leisure: traveling to warm beaches, afternoons spent reading, extra rounds of golf, more time for hobbies, friends and families. For others, however, employment continues to be an important aspect of their lives. From those who continue full-time careers to those who put in a few hours to keep busy, work can be a key part of life after retirement age.

Banking on it
When Eileen Thompson visited businesses this year to drop off TruBank calendars, many people said, “I thought you retired?” or “Oh, you’re back!”

“There were lots of smiles,” says Thompson. “So many of these people are good friends and customers that I have built strong relationships with. Those connections last a lifetime.”

You can’t really say that Thompson “is back” because she hasn’t really left. She’s held the title AVP of business development since 2009, and, although her official retirement was Sept. 30, 2020, she’s still a familiar face around the community at events TruBank sponsors. She also still goes into the office part-time.

Wall Street Journal asked, "Why are so many advertising directors dying to work with the Budweiser Clydesdales?" Katie Deighton found the answer: The actor/horses are the ultimate professionals. "They arrive on time, take direction and never engage in haughty hoof stomping like many famous athletes." Directors, including Academy Award winners, consider working with them the equivalence of getting Meryl Streep as a leading lady. One said the horses never need more than one or two takes, even for tricks like hiking a football or knocking off a human's hat. The draft horses are pampered with five to seven hour bath and grooming sessions.

Criticizing China has dire consequences. Australia pushed for an investigation of the origins of the Wuhan virus, back in 2020 when COVID was still called that. China retaliated with huge tariffs on Aussie wine. Exports of Australian wine to mainland China, where 40% of all Australian wine was shipped, dropped 99% in 2023 compared to 2019. Total Australian wine exports have plunged 35%, by value, since 2019. Look for good deals in the U.S.

DAY OF KINDNESS SOCK DRIVE:
The Governor of Iowa and Mayor of West Des Moines have proclaimed Feb. 23 as “Day of Kindness.” This special occasion returns for a fourth year of impact after being created by the West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Academy Alumni who were seeking a way to make a positive impact on the community. This day is all about finding ways to be intentional with acts of kindness. Community members looking for ways to participate are encouraged to stop by the WDM Chamber office on Feb. 23 between 8 – 9 a.m. to drop off a new pair of socks. This sock drive will support West Des Moines Human Services through a “Socks of Love” campaign created by WDM Leadership Academy alum, Mick Grossman. The WDM Chamber will also have Hurts Donuts’ treats and coffee ready to enjoy with fellow kind Iowans who drop off socks. Last year, 865 pairs of socks were collected. The WDM Chamber is encouraging the community to embrace this initiative once again and help beat that record.
