Welcome to an extra edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by subscribers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.
“I have always loved snow and always laugh when people say how horrible the weather is, when really we have not had hard winters like what I remember from my growing up (Snow happens, Jan. 9, 2024). We moved to northwest Iowa in the winter of 1975, and the drifts were monstrous and much of the area was literally frozen. In April of 1973, we lived in Chariton, and I can remember one storm when the drifts were up to and over the clothes line my mom had in the backyard. She always told us to stay off of it when we had summer days, but that winter we made a sliding hill for our sleds from the poles that held up the lines. During that storm, and the 1975 one, I remember friends of my dad also coming to pick him up on a snowmobile to get to work. He was a 65-year employee of Hy-Vee and didn’t have snow days. “Your column brought back a few memories of my husband and I adjusting to life in a small Iowa town after moving from the big city, Chicago (Words, Jan. 10, 2024). We moved into our first home in April, so we looked forward to cutting the grass, or was it mowing? Food shopping — bag or sack? When one lived across the street, was it cater-cornered, catty wampus, or, my favorite, kitty korner? When snow came, we shoveled but were told snow was scooped. Went to work with a purse, but it really was a handbag. I was born and raised in Chicago and lived in a flat (apartment) and had a front room (living room). I know there must be a few more word differences, but these are the ones that came to mind quite rapidly (fast)!” - Diane

“Lightning bugs and June bugs are different insects (Words, Jan. 10, 2024). Fireflies are the same as lightning bugs, but I rarely say that. And I have no idea what firebugs and glowworms are. Johnnycakes are cornbread baked in a pan and cut into squares for eating. And how about crick vs creek? And ruhf vs rooof?” - Margaret

You learn something new every day. Sometimes it’s by accident, but sometimes it’s intentional. Some people continue their education out of necessity — to maintain a license, for example — while others enroll to further their career or launch a new one. Still others simply want to learn a new hobby or expand their horizons. Whatever the case, the thirst for knowledge knows no age limit or bounds. And plenty of opportunities — in person and online — are out there to quench it.
Degree of help
At the age of 47, Lisa England says she feels her calling and purpose in life is finally coming together.
For more than 15 years, she’s worked in human resources. Last May, she marked a new chapter as she received her master’s degree in industrial organizational psychology from Kansas State University.
With this degree, England is better equipped to “help others, like employers and leaders, be better and do better, to establish a psychologically safe workplace where employees can learn and grow while being themselves.”

The U.S. hot sauce market rose 150% between 2000 and 2014, more than the other top four condiments (barbecue sauce, ketchup, mayonnaise and mustard) combined, according to Euromonitor. By 2023, the industry was valued at $2.6 billion, IBISWorld estimates. David Tran, founder of Srichacha, started selling his hot sauce out of his Chevy van in Los Angeles in 1977. Now, 45 years after he first came to the U.S., Tran's net worth is $1 billion, according to Forbes. (Stacker)
"New Orleans style" chicken wings and chicken burgers are huge sensations in China, where they were invented by KFC China. They are unheard of in New Orleans, where "Buffalo" wings are popular, as in the rest of the U.S. They are also far less spicy than "Buffalo" wings. (Weilun Soon, WSJ)
