One of the greatest joys I experience in my job is the opportunity to recognize others for the amazing work they are doing in the communities we serve. And we do this as often as we can.
Our greatest effort in this is our Best of Des Moines readers’ poll, where we salute more than 750 people, businesses, places, events and more from 250-plus categories in CITYVIEW magazine. It is a monumental effort that gives credit where credit is due. We are in the midst of the 2024 contest right now, and the poll closes Nov. 13 with results published in our February edition. A record-setting 22,200 votes have been cast in the 2024 poll so far, and that number may exceed 25,000. That, in itself, is incredible. This the largest and most recognized poll of its kind in central Iowa, and it’s not even close. Learn more and vote now here.
In a similar but more tightly zoned way, we recognize a few hundred people, businesses, places, events and more in each of our 14 Iowa Living magazines. These community lifestyle publications are mailed to every home in the 20-plus cities we serve, making these residents’ choice polls the mostly widely distributed and viewed of their kind. For the past five years, we have also recognized leaders in the business community through CITYVIEW’s Business Journal, a section of the magazine in each issue. With more than 100,000 print and digital readers, CITYVIEW’s Business Journal is the most read business publication in central Iowa. We started recognizing business leaders five years ago with an event called “17 from 2017” and worked our way up one each year. We decided this year that we would do away with the number and the business designation and simply recognize as many people as we saw fit from the nominations received. And, in doing so, we brought back a popular CITYVIEW designation from years ago with “People Making A Difference.” Honorees this year include Paula Dierenfeld, Brad Buck, Martha Kester, Amy E. Heinz, Blaire Massa, Susan Dunn, Ben Page, Jennifer Scharn and Jay Byers.

Australia PM Albanese visited China Monday. The two countries have been feuding since before COVID. Newsroom Tokyo reported that Australia is seeking a lifting of punitive tariffs on its lobster and wine exports to China. It's always about food and booze.
The US Department of Labor (USDL) reported that wet leaves are as guilty of causing fatal accidents as ice, both to cars and pedestrians. US Department of Transportation reports that it takes three times as far for a car to break on wet leaves or ice as it does on a dry surface. USDL says 15% of accidental deaths in the US are caused by pedestrian falls, which mostly happen in autumn and winter.
