We're Getting Ready for a HUGE Adoption Event

HALO is preparing for a huge, groundbreaking, lifesaving effort... a MEGA adoption event where the goal is to find loving forever homes for 600 dogs and cats.

We did a similar event last year and found homes for over 300 dogs and cats... but this one will be even bigger.  Thanks to the help of PetSmart Charities, lots of participating groups, and tons of media, advertising and promotion..

this is going to be the biggest adoption event Phoenix has ever had!

In order to prepare for the event, we need to be able to house some additional animals in the few days leading up to it.

The problem is:  HALO's normal number of kennels isn't enough to do it.

25 more kennels than our normal number are needed for the event.  They cost less when we buy them all at once, for a total of $1,550.

If we receive more than $1,550 in donations, the rest will go towards the animals' care.

Will you help us with the 25 kennels?

To make a donation online towards the kennels, just write "dog kennels" in the comments section.

If we receive more than $1,550 in donations, the rest will go towards the animals' care.  The animals for the event will need vaccines, spay/neuter surgeries, collars, tags, and the whole kit and kaboodle too!

Happy Tails

First, a quick HALO Lingo Lesson:

Crumb (noun):  A teeny tiny baby kitten that is so young that all it really does is drink milk, poop, mew, and scoot around on its stubby, wobbly little legs.

Try using it in a sentence!  "I just found three crumbs sleeping in a little pile in my garden.  Maybe they belong to the neighbor's cat... they never did get her spayed like I urged them to."

 Zorro

Zorro in his foster home

Zorro was a crumb when he came to HALO.  He was turned in at another shelter and was in danger of being euthanized there because he was so young, unweaned, and without a mom. Luckily they reached out to HALO and one of our awesome foster volunteers offered to bottle feed Zorro and his three siblings until they were big enough to be spayed and neutered and put up for adoption.

Zorro grew up fast under his foster mom's care.  He loved to follow her around the house and would meow if he was afraid she'd forgotten about him.  He also loved climbing up the cat tree and clinging to it like a baby bear.  When he was old enough to leave, his foster mom was sad to see him go, but happy to know that he would soon find his forever home.

It wasn't long after he went up for adoption that this charming boy convinced a nice lady to adopt him.  He became the little brother to two adult kitties who took quite a shine to him, don't you think?

Zorro in his forever home, snuggling like a pro with new brothers Leo and Cosmo.  His new mom says he's doing great!

HALO has found loving homes for over 200 kittens like Zorro so far this summer!

Microchipping Your Pet - FAQ

"Don't worry, sweetie.  Luckily, your owners microchipped you. I just got off the phone with your owners and they're on their way to come pick you up."

Every HALO animal is microchipped before they're put up for adoption.  Once they're in a great home, we want them to stay there!  Some people don't know how microchipping works, or why it is important...are you one of them?

Microchipping Frequently Asked Questions

"Does microchipping work like GPS?... when my kitty gets lost I can track her by satellite, right?

Microchips are not tracking devices, nor do they work with GPS.  They are simply a tiny chip that contains only an ID number, which the microchip company registers under your name with your phone number, address, email address, etc.  If Fluffkins gets lost and ends up at an animal shelter, they will scan her for a microchip.  The number comes up on the scanner, the shelter gets your contact info from the microchip company, they call you, and then the shelter will keep Fluffkins safe so you can come get her.

"Isn't it wrong to put a tracking device into an animal?  Then it's just a short slippery slope until we're putting bar codes on our children!"

If your pet is microchipped, this doesn't mean "big brother" is now spying on you and your dog. Microchips are a sort of "internal id tag" which contains no more information than the traditional pet collar ID tag.  In a community where so many animals are being euthanized at the shelters who are too full and strapped for resources to care for them, it's important to protect your pet from becoming one of the unlucky ones.  An animal with no identification only has a matter of days between being picked up as a stray and either being put up for adoption, transferred to another shelter, or euthanized. If you want more than a few days to find Fluffkins before she would find herself in danger of being put down, then you should microchip her.

"How long does microchipping take?  I don't want Fluffkins to have to stay at the vet overnight."

Microchipping takes no longer than a vaccine!  We're talking less than half an hour.  If you get it done at HALO you don't even need an appointment.

"Isn't microchipping just too expensive to be worth it?  My vet charges almost $100, and there's a monthly fee!"

We charge only $25 to microchip an animal, which includes free registration.  You can update your contact information on the chip at any time for free on the 24 Petwatch website.  We occasionally have microchipping specials where we lower the price as well...

FROM JULY 1st through 18th, microchipping is only $18 as part of HALO's 18th birthday special!

Have you been procrastinating on getting one or more of your animals chipped?  Now is the perfect time to bring them by our shelter and take care of it!

Come to our shelter any time between 11am and 5pm, 7 days a week

Don't Forget the Big Picture

About 96,000 animals enter the shelters in Maricopa County each year.  Approximately half of them leave alive.

The other half are euthanized.  These are the animals that HALO focuses on saving.  We take animals in danger of euthanasia at other Valley shelters and give them love, care, and medical treatment, and then find them loving forever homes.

Our resources are limited to pay for their necessary vaccinations, antibiotics, spay/neuter surgeries, etc. We can only save as many dogs and cats as we can afford.  With support from our fellow animal lovers, we can afford to save more lives.

We are at the big shelters EVERY DAY, rescuing as many animals in danger of euthanasia as we can.

When you support HALO by Donating, Adopting, and Volunteering, you help save animals' lives.
