Don't Forget the Big Picture

About 96,000 animals enter the shelters in Maricopa County each year.  Approximately half of them leave alive.

The other half are euthanized.  These are the animals that HALO focuses on saving.  We take animals in danger of euthanasia at other Valley shelters and give them love, care, and medical treatment, and then find them loving forever homes.

Our resources are limited to pay for their necessary vaccinations, antibiotics, spay/neuter surgeries, etc. We can only save as many dogs and cats as we can afford.  With support from our fellow animal lovers, we can afford to save more lives.

We are at the big shelters EVERY DAY, rescuing as many animals in danger of euthanasia as we can.

When you support HALO by Donating, Adopting, and Volunteering, you help save animals' lives.

Summer Challenges for the Animals

Overheating and dehydration are far too common during the summer. Some pets are left alone in the house, without adequate food and water, while their owners go on vacation. Dogs are chained to trees or are left outside, forced to endure the sweltering heat.  The summer months are the height of "kitten season" so the shelter is full to the brim with cats born to strays or unfixed backyard pets.

Some of you probably heard about this need by mail a week or two ago.  Anything you can contribute will be a great help.

$15 can buy a heating pad to keep bottle babies warm and cozy

$30 is enough to fully vaccinate a litter of kittens or puppies

$50 can spay or neuter an animal, to help lessen the problem next summer

$100 can buy antibiotics to treat 5 puppies or kittens for coughing and sneezing

$500 will provide life-saving surgery to an injured dog or cat

The animals need us even more in the summer.

Can you help?

Desy the Chihuahua: Foster Mom of... a Kitten?

This unlikely pair were so happy to have found each other...  Desy the Chihuahua wanted to be a mommy, and Lilly the kitten desperately needed one.

Lilly, a brown tabby kitten was just two weeks old when she was found all alone; no mom or siblings in sight. A Good Samaritan brought her to a local shelter hoping to get her some help.  Many kittens her age who show up as a orphans to Phoenix shelters are euthanized because they don't have enough bottle feeder volunteers or mommy cats to go around.  Fortunately for Lilly, HALO had one human foster mommy available to bottle feed Lilly, so HALO took Lilly into their care.  HALO's volunteer began bottle feeding her, but like many kittens, she was having a little trouble adjusting to the bottle.

Desy, a white chihuahua mix with a cute underbite, arrived at HALO lactating but with no puppies of her own.  But Desy clearly wanted desperately to be a mommy, because when she heard the little brown kitten mewing, she got very excited.

Ideally kittens are raised with a mommy cat, but because there were no mommy cats available, HALO thought, why not put these two together to see how they do?

Desy took Lilly into her care immediately.  Lilly was the puppy she wanted so badly... she didn't seem to mind at all that she was actually a kitten.

The day after, Desy also got to be the surrogate mom to 4 little newborn puppies.  Lilly got along great with the puppies and grew up alongside them until she was big enough to be put up for adoption.  Since then, Desy and Lilly have both been adopted tp great new families.

Desy and Lilly are a great reminder of the importance of thinking outside the box!

One Lucky Girl...

Meeting this sweet and mellow girl, you would never be able to tell all that she's been through.  We took Paria into our care because she had been scheduled for euthanasia for temperament issues.   She had barked in her kennel in a threatening way. Because many dogs that find themselves in a shelter are simply scared and trying to defend their limited personal space, that behavior is very common in shelter animals.

HALO evaluated her temperament and she passed with flying colors.  She has been nothing but sweet ever since we took her in.

Unfortunately, Paria experienced rare complications from her spay surgery.  Not long after the surgery, her body formed a blood clot which lodged in her spine and caused paralysis in both of her back legs.  She was also anemic, and was treated with steroids, IV fluids, and pain meds, and received the highest quality vet care from the amazing vets at Companion Pet Clinic.  Our staff and volunteers gave her lots of TLC and love as she recovered.

Often a volunteer would lie next to her in her big kennel, to snuggle her gently and pet her.  She regained use of one of her back legs, but not the other.  It had to be amputated, and she has recovered very well from the surgery.  She is now healthy and happy, and is available for adoption.

Paria has been the most wonderfully loving dog throughout her recovery, never complaining, and always wagging her tail with a smile on her face.  She is an inspiration to everyone here at the shelter!

We hope she finds a home soon!  But until then, we are happy to continue to care for a peach like her.

Thank you to PACC911 and Companion Pet Clinic for helping with the cost of Paria's medical care!

We Love the New Vehicles!

Thank you again to all of you who helped HALO replace the truck that was stolen.  The animals can now move quickly through the adoption process, so we can save as many lives as possible!  The two new vehicles are in use now.  We are so grateful for all your help.
