"Don't worry, sweetie. Luckily, your owners microchipped you. I just got off the phone with your owners and they're on their way to come pick you up."
Every HALO animal is microchipped before they're put up for adoption. Once they're in a great home, we want them to stay there! Some people don't know how microchipping works, or why it is important...are you one of them?
Microchipping Frequently Asked Questions
"Does microchipping work like GPS?... when my kitty gets lost I can track her by satellite, right?
Microchips are not tracking devices, nor do they work with GPS. They are simply a tiny chip that contains only an ID number, which the microchip company registers under your name with your phone number, address, email address, etc. If Fluffkins gets lost and ends up at an animal shelter, they will scan her for a microchip. The number comes up on the scanner, the shelter gets your contact info from the microchip company, they call you, and then the shelter will keep Fluffkins safe so you can come get her.
"Isn't it wrong to put a tracking device into an animal? Then it's just a short slippery slope until we're putting bar codes on our children!"
If your pet is microchipped, this doesn't mean "big brother" is now spying on you and your dog. Microchips are a sort of "internal id tag" which contains no more information than the traditional pet collar ID tag. In a community where so many animals are being euthanized at the shelters who are too full and strapped for resources to care for them, it's important to protect your pet from becoming one of the unlucky ones. An animal with no identification only has a matter of days between being picked up as a stray and either being put up for adoption, transferred to another shelter, or euthanized. If you want more than a few days to find Fluffkins before she would find herself in danger of being put down, then you should microchip her.
"How long does microchipping take? I don't want Fluffkins to have to stay at the vet overnight."
Microchipping takes no longer than a vaccine! We're talking less than half an hour. If you get it done at HALO you don't even need an appointment.
"Isn't microchipping just too expensive to be worth it? My vet charges almost $100, and there's a monthly fee!"
We charge only $25 to microchip an animal, which includes free registration. You can update your contact information on the chip at any time for free on the 24 Petwatch website. We occasionally have microchipping specials where we lower the price as well...
FROM JULY 1st through 18th, microchipping is only $18 as part of HALO's 18th birthday special!
